from the Original
Book Jacket Description: "This richly colorful exploration
of 1808 London was a result of an enterprising collaboration by the
celebrated caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and architectural draftsman
Augustus Pugin. Together these artists produced a series of lifelike
illustrations of London that show a living, vital glimpse of one of
the world's great cities in its prime. The beautiful color plates are
the result of Pugin's meticulous, almost photographic renderings of
London landmarks (both interiors and exteriors, many of which no longer
exist), peopled with humorously lively and colorful characters by Rowlandson.
Over 104 color plates, accurately representing detailed views of the
Bartholomew Fair, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the Royal
Circus, Lloyds of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum,
Newgate Prison, St. James Palace, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, and many,
many more, all in their splendor of the early nineteenth century. Editor
St. Aubyn has blended her insightful comments with the original text
of William Henry Pyne, providing an overview of many landmarks, past
and present. "
