A beautiful, large-format
reproduction volume, originally published in 1805, Pyne's British
Costumes was written, drawn, and aquatinted by William Henry Pyne.
This reprint features 60 full- page, full-color plates of professional
and working-class men and women from all walks of life: bakers knife-grinders,
lamplighters, showmen, alderman, judges and admirals, Highland shepherds,
Welsh peasants and milkmaids. Also, special entertainment events are
depicted, including the country fair and merry-go-round. Each plate
is accompanied by Pyne's original text of 1805, and these commentaries
provide a wealth of detail a historical observation on the professional
and working habits of people of the late 18th and early 19th centuries,
and the various levels of this society and their sense of who they were.
